Transportation Sculpture
Tuesday, March 27, 2018
Project description:
Students will investigate how to express their ideas using many different mediums in a sculptural style. We will brainstorm ideas about our different modes of transportation and then create sculptures that represent that model tangibly express these ideas. We found in our first lesson that many of our students expressed interest in vehicles such as planes and trucks and decided they would find personal relevance in creating their own representations of these everyday objects.
Essential Understanding:
I understand how to choose appropriate media and tools to transform found objects and provided materials into tangible expressions of my ideas about transportation.
Outcomes:
After a group discussion and brainstorming session, I will be able to create a plan for my vehicle sculpture and use found objects to express my ideas about transportation.
After exploring the available materials and tools I will be able to choose the appropriate media for the expression of my ideas and will be able to talk about the aesthetic choices I made to create my final product.
Skills:
1. Work on creative problem solving
2. Explore many different materials and mediums
3. Expressing ideas through the artistic experience.
The Students were engaged throughout the lesson. One student noted that there are forms of transportation that aren't always mechanical such as boats or horses. She decided for her sculpture to create a horse because it was her favorite animal.
This student wasn't incredibly interested in making a
3-D rendition of her plane but she participated in the planning stage of the lesson. Although this class is focused on three-dimensional art she explored some abstract expressions through drawing. We will try to incorporate her love for these abstract forms into future lessons to encourage her to create three-dimensional art.
To begin the class we did an ideation strategy that involved brainstorming some modes of transportation as well as some of their favorite things to travel with or travel to. To connect their ideation with the lesson we showed pictures of composite vehicles that combined things like butterflies with ships or cats with buses. This opened up their imaginations to the possibilities of combinations they could make of vehicles with everyday objects.
This student created a horse sculpture because of her love for horses. This showed her ability to express her interests through her art. She used her critical thinking and problem solving skills to create a texture resembling horse fur by using panty hose to coat the paper towel tube body.
This student decided to build a truck. He discussed his interest in firemen and fire trucks while constructing his vehicle and talked about he different functions of vehicles.
This student decided on a palm tree spaceship. During the ideation phase she discussed wanting to travel to a tropical place and when she explored the art store she found a palm frond which would work perfectly for her sculpture.
