Creative Masks

Tuesday, April 3, 2018

Project Description:

We will be teaching students how to create a mask. We will show a slideshow of different masks (some historical, some cultural, and some aesthetics). This lesson is based on the museum visit for our fourth class. This exhibit is on masks created by different artists. These masks will eventually get auctioned off but are on display for the public prior to the auction. It is important to have the students gain prior knowledge about masks in general, before our museum visit. The students will gain a greater appreciation and more respect for the masks in the exhibit because of this lesson.

Essential Understanding:

I understand the different ways to design and create a mask. I will gain a better understanding on how 3-D art can be functional and how creativity can inhabit different ways of making.

Objectives:

I can use historical, cultural, and aesthetics masks as references to create my own mask. I will gain knowledge and respect towards the mask making process. I will be able to use my prior knowledge from this lesson when viewing the mask exhibit for our next class. I can use my ideas and sketches as a starting point in the creative process of mask making.

Skills:

1. Gain some historical background about masks

2. Refine fine motor skills

The third class was loads of fun. It felt like a studio classroom because all of the student were in different places in their projects. We had them create the mask structure after we gave a demo and that went really fast. Thankfully we had the transportation projects to work on and they all made some great improvement on those. We will get to decorate the masks next week during our field trip to the museum.

The student made some huge progress on her horse after the masks were made. She really loves how its turning out. We are all so happy with how her confidence has grown and how she has refined fine motor skills.

The students all created the masks really quickly. They didn't have any struggles and were able to move on quickly to the left over transportation projects from the week before. The mask structures all look great and some of the students are already coming up with idea on what they want to decorate them with. During this process we all discussed some mask history.

Her zebra car now has strips and tail and next time she will finally be able to attach the head. Creating the strips out of cloth was an amazing idea on her part and really demonstrates how her creative problem solving skills have grown.
