Project Description:

For this lesson our group will be visiting the Fort Collins art museum to view the exhibit on masks made by members of the community.  We are going to teach students about the purpose of creating masks in our culture as well as others and encourage them to express their own ideas through decoration of the plaster cast masks they made last week.  Our students have expressed a lot interest in expressing their identities through art so our lesson will focus on the juxtaposition of disguising one’s identity with a mask while still expressing that identity through embellishment of said masks.

Essential understanding:

  • Students will understand how other members of the community have used masks to express their own identities.

  • Students will be able to transfer information gained from viewing the work of other artists into inspiration for their own artwork.

  • Students will understand how to use found materials and media to express their identities in a 3D mask.

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to choose appropriate media to decorate their plaster casts masks in a way that expresses their own ideas about what makes them unique.

  2. Students will be able to observe the work of other artists and understand how their artistic choices determined the outcome of their artwork.

  3. Students will be able to transfer this knowledge of artistic communication to the creation of their own artwork as they participate in a genuine artistic experience.

Skills:

1. Work on observational skills

2. Applying inspiration into their own art

Fort Collins Museum of Art was a great location for this class. We got to explore masks created by the community. Then we got to create our own masks!

After she went thought the museum and observed the masks she was really inspired to start creating her own mask.

I think he might have enjoyed people watching even more then painting his mask. People watching is a great way to exercise observational skills.

Its easy to tell his favorite color is red. He painted his mask red along with his pinch pot a couple weeks ago.

He created his mask and said it looked like someone he knew which made everyone laugh. Its great to see that he is connecting his art with the outside world and that it has a personal meaning to him.

This student liked all the masks so much that he had a really hard time picking a favorite. He decided that they were all his favorites. He was ready to go back and create his mask after all the inspiration from the community.

She liked painting her mask and after this picture she glued many red buttons on in a really cool pattern. Someone made the observation that it looked like a wrestlers mask and a few people agreed. She really loved how it came out.

The whole class had to share only two hot glue guns. It was tough but they made it work. This was a great way to work on collaboration skills.

She ended up not taking her mask home because she didn't want it because she didn't want it to fall and break due to the weight.

He had a great time pulling all of us to his favorite masks in the gallery. He was really demonstrating his engagement in this activity. We were really able to see is excitement grow from class to class.

Her and one of the teachers had some wonderful conversations about the masks. She spend a lot of time looking at each one individuality. Its clear to tell in her mask that she was inspired by what she saw.

She mixed some beautiful colors and dotted them on her white mask. It really remind the class of spring. Her technique of loading up the brush with paint then dabbling it on her mask worked really well for her and was a great idea.
